{"id":250,"date":"2022-06-02T22:24:37","date_gmt":"2022-06-02T22:24:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/medschool.dev.vanderbilt.edu\/vbs-wellness\/?page_id=250"},"modified":"2022-06-21T21:18:29","modified_gmt":"2022-06-21T21:18:29","slug":"enacted-suggestions","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/medschool.dev.vanderbilt.edu\/vbs-wellness\/enacted-suggestions\/","title":{"rendered":"Enacted Recommendations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong style=\"font-size: 1.2rem\">Graduate Students:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hired Associate Director of Trainee Well-being (RC Stabile) who acts as liaison with the UCC, has\u00a0launched a series of well-being programs for our trainees, and is currently surveying student\u00a0counseling needs and perceptions.<\/li>\n<li>Partnership with UCC for counselors who focus on biomedical graduate student needs (Tamaki\u00a0Silver and Ciera Scott)<\/li>\n<li>The incorporation of wellness and DEI topics into the first-year curriculum with campus and\u00a0internal partners.<\/li>\n<li>The establishment of a policy and support structure for students to change research groups.<\/li>\n<li>Establishment of student focus group to discuss UCC policies and concerns with UCC providers<\/li>\n<li>Multiple recommendations to graduate programs:\n<ul>\n<li>Grading in the first year<\/li>\n<li>Compacts with faculty on all aspects of graduate training<\/li>\n<li>Clear guidelines on the qualifying exams including student-committee dialog in advance of\u00a0the exam<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Postdoctoral Fellows:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hired Assistant Director for Postdoc support (Jan Varadarajan)<\/li>\n<li>A partnership with the Vanderbilt International Research Alliance (VIRAL) to support and promote\u00a0community among international trainees.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Staff:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Activities in the Pod to relieve stress \u2013 mindfulness breaks, HR workshops on understanding each\u00a0other, DEI book club<\/li>\n<li>Monthly meetings focused on mental health and wellness.<\/li>\n<li>Staff-generated activities such as those initiated during the pandemic to attack isolation\n<ul>\n<li>Water cooler zoom chats<\/li>\n<li>Discussion of struggles people were having and celebration of successes at any scale<\/li>\n<li>Regular wellness checks<\/li>\n<li>Slack channel to discuss non-work activities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Implementing recommendations from the Ingram Group to strengthen administrative support for\u00a0the Pods and therein faculty.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Faculty:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Developing stronger mentor training including regular training sessions led by\u00a0Center for the Improvement of Mentored\u00a0Experiences in Research facilitators<\/li>\n<li>EMBO Laboratory Leadership Course<\/li>\n<li>Continuing strong programming for diversity, equity and inclusion \u2013 Discovery Science Emerging Scholars (DSES), wellness sessions with Employee Assistance Program (EAP)<\/li>\n<li>Bridge Program for lapsed funding<\/li>\n<li>Formulation for criteria for each rank of the Research and Educator tracks and process for annual\u00a0performance evaluations<\/li>\n<li>Central administration responding to Task Force on Administrative Effectiveness report<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>School-Wide:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The hiring of a Program Manager for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Felysha Jenkins, who works\u00a0with students, postdocs\u00a0and faculty on DEI issues with special emphasis on inclusion.<\/li>\n<li>Update website to streamline wellness resources<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Graduate Students: Hired Associate Director of Trainee Well-being (RC Stabile) who acts as liaison with the UCC, has\u00a0launched a series of well-being programs for our trainees, and is currently surveying student\u00a0counseling needs and perceptions.
